Kiss & Tell: The Bloody Truth

EWWWWW PERIODS. GROSS! As if. Periods are amazing and so are you.

November Bloody November! Everything that has ever been deemed to be evil about women is, in truth, what makes us powerful. AND THAT IS WHY THEY SHAME US. This month we’re baring our sacred souls and bleeding it out together with special guests Lindsey Charles (The Cell Phones) and Elizabeth Gomez (the kates, Drinkers with Writing Problems). The cramps, the sex, the snacks, the stress, the silly and the serious stories about that time of the month. The Chicago Period Project will be hanging out to answer questions and tell you more about their mission to make feminine hygiene accessible to all. Please bring a donation of UNOPENED Tampons, Feminine Pads, Underwear, Toilet Paper! ALSO IT IS THE VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY OF ALICIA SWIZ SO WEAR YOUR PARTY PANTS & BRING YOUR BEST BABES!

More about the Chicago Period Project

The Chicago Period Project empowers homeless and in-need people to experience their periods with dignity. The feminist, grassroots organization distributes pads, tampons, underwear, and other critical menstruation supplies to local shelters, schools, and crisis support networks. All menstruating people should have reliable access to period supplies. The Chicago Period Project’s goal is for the 29 percent of Chicago residents living below the poverty line to have healthy periods, and for us to raise awareness about this issue.

SlutTalk: Sex, Lies & Miramax

Swingers. Good Will Hunting. Clerks. Pulp Fiction. Chicago.

Miramax Films, founded by Harvey Weinstein, is responsible for some of our most beloved contemporary films. Weinstein built a personal empire and influential film catalogue that was dependent on devaluing and dehumanizing women while he celebrated and funded men just like him.

And for decades we awarded him. 81 times total.

SlutTalk founder & Gender Studies professor Alicia Swiz takes a look at popular Miramax films and what they teach us about men, women and sex. One part lecture, two parts Q&A, Swiz weaves personal narrative and media theory to incite critical dialogue about the influence Hollywood films have on our collective cultural identity.

Kiss & Tell: The Friend Zone

SlutTalk presents Kiss & Tell – a live, feminist advice column about sex, dating and modern romance. Every month professor and performer Alicia Swiz fields questions and leads an interactive audience dialogue on trending and timeless matters of the heart. Special guests from the Chicago community drop in to share stories from the hilarious to the heartbreaking and Swiz buys drinks for those brave enough to “kiss & tell.”

In August we explore “The Friend Zone” with Nikki Nigl and ask: How does sex affect friendships? Can men and women ever really be friends? Can you be friends with an ex? How do gender politics affect our platonic relationships?

SlutTalk Diaries: Dating Dudes

Have you ever gotten “too drunk” on a date? Been worried you had sex “too soon” Are you too aggressive/intimidating/independent/assertive for most men? Maybe you just aren’t “girlie” enough? In an era when women are collectively their most empowered why does dating still feel like a like a page out of Emily Post?

Drawing from her personal experience and her academic training, professor and performer Alicia Swiz will facilitate an interactive conversation about the influence of traditional gender role behavior on modern dating practices with a focus on heterosexual relationships. One part lecture, two parts Q&A, Alicia uses humor and candid observation to provide insight and awareness into this taboo topic.

Alicia Swiz is an interdisciplinary artist and educator with a critical eye and a feminist heart. An alumna of the UNC-Greensboro Women’s and Gender Studies program, Alicia currently resides in Chicago, IL where she is an adjunct professor of Humanities at Harold Washington College. Alicia writes about film and feminism for The Frisky, Chicago Literati, and The Daily Dot. You can find her on the stage or on the internet facilitating dialogue that engages audiences in thinking critically about gender and media. Sometimes she’s funny and sometimes she’s not. Say hi! @popgoesalicia
