When you live in a patriarchy, as America is, it is easy to celebrate the victories, achievements and lives of men. Men who are smart, brave, and revolutionary...like Dr. King, like Barack Obama. The women in partnership with these men, while present and acknowledged, are secondary, behind the scenes, their voices are often absent. But, what of these women, like Coretta Scott King, like Michelle Obama? Powerful, iconic, revered women who are known to us because of their husbands relationship to the world. How did and do they do their work in the shadows of men? How do they love men and remain vulnerable and fragile yet strong and confident? i want to ask of them, as I've asked my own mother and grandmother, how do you share your soul with a world that feels soulless? In honoring MLK and bidding farewell to Obama let us also remember the women they loved, the women they respected, the women who are the soul of the world.
To The First Lady, With Love is a lovely collection of four Thank You notes written to Michelle Obama and in honor of her birthday tomorrow. Thank you, Michelle.
